BUSINESS INOVATE

As the name suggests ‘information’ and ‘technology’ are the fundamental pillars of ‘information technology’. Establishing, maintaining and developing, both, information and technology is hard work but a must in a company that is looking to succeed. If you think about it, you will realize that both information and technology are dynamic concepts, which makes IT an ever-changing and ever-growing field. But does that mean every IT technician has innovation on his or her mind? Most definitely not!

If every IT technician naturally worked towards innovations then things would have been much easier. But the fact is that that is rarely the case. More often than not, IT innovations come along when they are monitored and channeled by a leader who understands the nature of IT people.

First and foremost, you need a team that is ready for innovations and that can only happen if you have a strong foundation throughout your team. It is very important that before you launch innovations into your IT department, you ensure that your team is ready to handle these changes. This means that their basics are strong and they have their head around what is happening. The leader of the team also has to understand that bringing along IT innovations is not an easy task and without a strong foundation in technical matters, the team will not be able to move forward smoothly.

And as with any kind of changes that are taking place, the team should be supported by good communication and this communication should move in both directions, upwards and downwards. Having a strong foundation is a good start but for innovations to move forward it is important that communication is clear so that each process runs with as little hitches as possible.

Good communication throughout the team and its managers coupled with strong technical skills will instill faith and confidence in the team about their own capabilities. Once the team is convinced that they are able to take on any progress or challenge that comes their way, they will be able to deal better with these innovations. At the same time, a team working together as a whole adds a great deal to success when faced with such challenges.

Teamwork extends to other departments in your organization too. This means that whatever innovations you are doing in your team should have a positive impact on the organization as a whole. Moreover, these actions should be in sync with whatever is being done in the rest of the organization because going off on your own tangent will not get you very far.

As the manger of a tech team, your responsibility is to make sure that the members of your team understand the importance of the business side of things. The fact is that for many technical employees that side of the story does not come too easily. Many times they need to be reminded that their role as an IT technician is to meet the business goals of the company as a whole; it is always teamwork.

It is not easy for IT people to think like marketers, but given that they are all working towards the same goal, it is very important that the IT team has the same vision as the other departments. IT innovations will be successful in an organization only if they are in the same line as the other operations.
